Pots & Planters: Why Choose ThemOver Ground Planting
We all wish we could grow beautiful plants, fabulous fruits and vibrant veggies in the ground, but this simply isn’t always the case. Many a garden’s soil conditions simply don’t allow for healthy growth and this makes it impossible to garden the way we always envisioned.
This is the reason, in its simplest form, that many Aussie gardeners choose pots and containers over ground planting. But there are many other reasons why the manufactured container is a winner over its natural counterpart.

Let’s take at why below:
You can control the soil conditions
The best pots and planters allow for optimal growing conditions as you can choose your own soil. There are many Australian gardens with poor soil conditions or soil conditions that allow for some plants to grow but not others. As such, containers allow you to optimise your soil conditions and grow the exact fruit, veg and plants you want without having to toil through unworkable soil.
They allow you to customise your planting
Coming back to that last point – many soil conditions don’t allow gardeners to grow all the varieties they want in the one garden. They may allow for some particular plants to grow whilst totally destroying those luscious tomatoes you were growing in time for summer salads.
Therefore, with containers, you can choose different soil types that will allow you to grow everything you want in their individual containers. Want some daffodils in pots? No worries. Want to grow a bunch of winter veg in a trough planter? Hey, no problem!
Containers allow for maximum versatility and this is a reason why Aussie gardeners often choose them over the monotonal ground soil.
You want relocate them when necessary
It can be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to relocate in-ground plants. This is because their roots are well-connected with the soil and can suffer from serious separation anxiety (basically, they’re a nuisance to try and rip out). But individual containers allow you to easily relocate your fruit, veg and plants when the time is right.
Many plants – especially fruit and vegetables – require optimal sun and, at times, a little shade to cool off. But in-ground planting makes this a near-impossibility. As such, container planting makes relocating your plants an absolute breeze and allows for healthier growth.
You can plant on uneven land
The Australian landscape can be hilly at the best of times. Therefore, the last thing you want is to try and grow plants in a spot that will have them tilting or even falling over – this just defeats the purpose of planting in the first place! Conversely, the right pots and planters allow for you to grow on uneven plots of land whilst keeping them upright.
They aerate the soil
It is far easier to aerate soil in containers than it is in the ground. The in-ground soil has been there for a long time and it doesn’t want to be disturbed. It won’t take kindly to you trying to toil through to plant some new variety in its depths. Conversely, container soil is amiably malleable and will allow you to do exactly that – aerate its soil with ease and simplicity.
So, as you can see, there are many awesome benefits to planting in pots and planters as opposed to in-ground planting. We totally recommend this growing technique unless, of course, you have the perfect natural growing conditions!
